Veterans Awards Nominations Information

United Tribes of NC is now accepting nominations for the 2027 Veterans Awards! Veterans’ awards will be presented during the 2027 Indian Unity Conference during the conference banquet on Friday evening, March 5, 2027.

The award includes the NC veteran’s ticket plus one guest ticket for the banquet. Please provide the name of the additional guest when completing the nomination application.

 

SUBMISSIONS WINDOW: October 1, 2026 –

January 31, 2027

DEADLINE: 11:59 pm, January 31, 2027

ELIGIBILITY

1. To enter, the nominee must be an enrolled member of a state or federally recognized American Indian tribe and currently residing in North Carolina or live in another state but are enrolled in a North Carolina state or federally recognized tribe.  A copy of the nominee’s tribal enrollment card must be submitted with the nomination application. The nomination will be disqualified if no proof of tribal membership in a federally or state recognized tribe is provided with application.

The state and federally recognized tribes in NC are: Catawba Nation, Coharie Tribe, Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Haliwa-Saponi Indian Tribe, Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, Meherrin Indian Tribe, Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation, Sappony, Waccamaw Siouan Tribe. 

2. The veteran nominee must have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

3. Nominations must come from a NC state or federally recognized tribe or urban Indian organization. Self-nominations or nominations made outside of these perimeters will not be accepted.

4. Only one nomination will be accepted from each NC state or federally recognized tribe or urban Indian organization. 

 

NOMINATION GUIDELINES & PROCESS

  • Nominations accepted online only. No paper nominations.

  • Payments by credit card only. No checks are accepted.

  • Application fee: $200 must be paid when the nomination is submitted. The Application fee partially covers the cost of the banquet and plaque for the nominee and one guest.

  • Before you begin the online nomination form, you must possess this information regarding the veteran:

    • A copy of the veteran’s tribal enrollment card.

    • Veteran’s full name as on military records.

    • Veteran’s email address and phone number.

    • Veteran's Branch of Service: Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, etc.

    • Veteran's Rank of Service: Captain, Major, Sergeant First Class, Corporal, Petty Officer, Private 4th Class (PFC), etc.

    • Veteran’s Service Connection: Vietnam, WWII, Korea, Operation Iraqi Freedom, state-side, etc.

    • Veteran's Dates of Service: Starting and ending dates

  • In the online nomination form, you must specify the veteran’s enrolled state or federally recognized tribe and upload a copy of the veteran’s tribal enrollment card. Then you will select which NC state or federally recognized tribe or urban Indian organization the veteran is representing (ex: Veteran is Lumbee, representing Triangle Native American Association or Veteran is Sappony, representing the Sappony).

  • All nomination submissions must be complete when submitting. No incomplete nomination applications are accepted.
