Quilting Competition

SUBMISSIONS WINDOW: Oct 1, 2026 – 10:00 am,  Thurs March 4, 2027

DEADLINE: 10:00 am, Thursday, March 4, 2027

ELIGIBILITY

To enter, the quilter must be an enrolled member of a *federally- or state- recognized American Indian tribe and currently residing in North Carolina or live in another state but are enrolled in a North Carolina federally- or state-recognized tribe. A copy of the quilt-maker’s tribal enrollment card must be attached with application. Entry will be disqualified if no proof of tribal membership in a federally or state-recognized tribe is provided with application.

*NC federally- and state-recognized tribes: Catawba Nation, Coharie Tribe, Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Haliwa-Saponi Indian Tribe, Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, Meherrin Indian Tribe, Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation, Sappony, Waccamaw Siouan Tribe. 

If you are registering online for the Quilting Competition, a place is provided for you to upload a copy of the quilt-maker’s tribal enrollment card. 

If you register at the conference, you must attach a copy of the quilt-maker’s tribal enrollment card to the Quilt Documentation Entry Form. 

 

JUDGED CATEGORIES:

Pieced and Stitched: This category will show quilts that are individually cut pieces and are sewn together by hand or machine to form the pattern of the quilt top.

Printed and Stitched: This category will show quilts that the top is either a preprinted pattern or a painted pattern material.

20 Years or Older: This category will show quilts that are 20 years old and older. (There is no format for design of the top).

 

ELIGIBILITY OF ENTRIES:

  • All quilts entered must be hand quilted (no machine stitched or pressure stitched entries will be judged)

  • Quilts may be individual pieced pattern, painted patterns or printed patterns.

  • One (1) quilt per category per person may be entered for a total of three (3) quilts.

QUILT DOCUMENTATION ENTRY FORM:

  • A Quilt Documentation Entry Form must be completed and attached to each quilt upon drop off. Please attach with safety pins.

  • If you register your quilt at the conference, you must attach a copy of the quilt maker’s tribal ID card to the Quilt Documentation Form. 

 

DROP OFF

  • Participants are responsible for having quilts delivered to the NC Indian Unity Conference Quilting Competition site. Quilts may be delivered when registration opens at 12pm (noon) on Wednesday, March 3, 2027, and 9:00 am on Thursday, March 4, 2027 and no later than 10:00 am.

  • NO QUILT IS TO BE LEFT WITHOUT BEING CHECKED IN BY QUILT COMPETITION PERSONNEL. Any quilt left unattended and not checked in will not be entered.

 

JUDGING:

Judging will take place on Thursday after the first General Assembly is over at 10:00. Quilts not checked in by 10:00 am on Thursday, March 4, 2027 will not be judged.

 

AWARDS:  Each category will receive a 1st ($100), 2nd ($75), and 3rd ($50) place prize. Announcement of awards will be made on Saturday, March 6, 2027 at the Awards Breakfast starting at 8:00 am. 

 

PICK-UP

  • Quilts must be picked up by the owner or their listed designee on Friday night  March 5, 2027 after the Banquet, and no later than 9:00 am Saturday morning March 6, 2027. 

  • All people picking up a quilt for another person must sign a form with their name, address, phone number, and the name of the quilt owner.

 

TERMS & CONDITIONS:

  • No quilt will be accepted if the above criteria are not met, and the entry form is not completely filled out and attached to the quilt as specified. 

  • United Tribes of North Carolina reserves the right to reject any entry for any reason.

  • United Tribes of North Carolina is not responsible for theft, loss or damage of quilts. United Tribes of North Carolina will make reasonable efforts to keep all quilts safe.
